Can you “add” places to your GPS?
First of all, I don’t own a GPS, so I don’t really know what I’m talking about, but I do use VZ navigator and understand the general workings of a GPS system, such as TOM TOM. I want to know if I can add places, such as new stores that pop-up in my neighborhood. The store is so new that the GPS software does not have it, but could I somehow map-tac my GPS to be associated with (for example) “Walmart in Joliet, IL.” I just fear that I live in a new area with which the revs of GPS software will never be able to keep up. Thanks in advance.

Most GPS units have the ability to update the included map. Some let you download updates (for a price) while others let you make corrections and upload them for others (TomTom does both of these.) Maps are updated about once every 3 months. Even if a place hasn’t opened yet, it will show up in the database ahead of time. The only problem here is that you may ask for the closest Walmart and end up at an empty field with a sign saying “Coming soon…”
GPS units also let you create a list of addresses, like a bookmark list. So you could drive to the front of the store, hit the “save” button and enter in the name of the store. Later if you want directions back to that place, just choose it from your bookmarks. What’s nice about this is that you don’t need an exact address. The GPS will use the physical longitude and latitude.
